With new territories come new… smells
January 27, 2008 10:30 pm Body Care, DIY, Essential Oils, MedicalTurns out, tagetes is STINKY! My package from Nature’s Gift arrived recently, and I mixed up a little vial of tagetes essential oil in a neem and avocado oil base. I started anointing dear Grant’s toes with it, and I was wowed by how smelly it is. Not like anything else I’ve smelled, and certainly not as offensive as neem, but very… strong. It’s also a very bright yellow color, kind of like turmeric or saffron, and it does kinda stain the skin/nail bed.
I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of results we get. I specifically designed this toenail fungus treatment for Grant, because he can’t stand the smell of vinegar. So the normal vinegar bath method was kinda out of the question, if I wanted him to be a willing participant. Here’s hoping this vinegar-free method makes all the stink worth it!

Hello! I got a recommendation from a manicurist that I should mix Tagetes, Myrrh, Tea Tree Oil and Lemon Oil to get rid of toenail fungus, but she did not say how much of each, nor how to apply it. I was curious how you are applying your mixture to Grant’s toes, and how much of the ingredients you added. Also, how is it working since it’s been a couple of months?? Thanks!

You know, Bridget, I’m kind of embarrassed to say that I can’t report much progress… but not necessarily because my blend doesn’t work. Grant just never wants to put it on!
We usually have an arrangement where I’ll insist on swabbing his funky toenails right before bedtime, but we both forget a lot of the time — and if I forget, there’s no WAY he’ll remember!
Hopefully you can be the motivation I needed to really nag him about it and force him to let me apply it. :) For what it’s worth, I use about 50% neem, a bunch of tea tree and tagetes and manuka, and a tiny bit of macadamia oil as a carrier. I score the toenail a bit with a file, and then I apply with a Q-Tip and try not to wipe it off.
I’ve often been told that doing a vinegar bath is even more effective, but since Grant can’t stand the smell of vinegar, I know I’d never get him to agree to that. So this is our next best thing, but you REALLY need to be diligent and consistent — something we’re both pretty bad at.
Let me know if your mixture works for you, and I’ll update as well if I get my act together and start doing it more frequently!

For toenail fungus? I had it for ~20 years and didn’t want to resort to those liver-killing drugs. What finally worked is a combination of cutting the infecting nails back constantly as far as I could, and taking an immunity-boosting supplement called Epicore. You can google it - several sites offer it. It’s quite an interesting supplement!
